Comenius
2nd year students enjoyed a 5 night stay in Iceland as part of the Lifelong Learning Comenius project funded by Léargas in September. This is the third such trip by students from the Coláiste, having already visited France and Norway earlier this year. Accompanied by teachers Collette Uí Liaim, and project co-ordinator Ciarán Ó Máille, they flew from Dublin to Reykjavik via Gatwick.
The students stayed with their Icelandic hosts of the school Saemundarskoli in the Reykjavik area and enjoyed a full programme which included outdoor activities, caving and kayaking. However, the highlight of the trip was undoubtedly the Golden Circle tour, stopping off to see the magnificent Gulfoss waterfall, the explosive Geysers, and the rift valley between the North American and Eurasian plates. They also returned with the correct pronunciation of the volcano which disrupted so much European air travel last year, Eyjafjallajokull !
The Coláiste now looks forward to welcoming students and teachers from France, Turkey, Finland, Norway, Denmark and Iceland to the Rossport area next April, and the Project will conclude with a trip to Helsinki next May for our current first years.
