Coláiste Chomáin's Inaugural Duathlon
Teachers and students from Coláiste Chomáin welcomed athletes from far and near to the first annual schools Duathlon which took place on the 20th of September 2011. The route around the village of Rossport consisted of some challenging terrain and was Run 3km/Cycle 16.5km/Run 3km in duration. Students from schools from all corners of Mayo took part both individually and in relays and at the starting line there were over 30 athletes waiting in anticipation to start.
The starting line was crossed and the race had begun. Competitors battled a tough climb in the initial run and the expression on their faces told us that at the transition area. The next element of the race was the 16.5 km cycle which was 2 laps of Rossport village and its surrounding hinterland. At the final transition there were a few athletes out in front and they finished very strongly.
At the end of the race there was a warm reception given to all athletes and teachers who had taken part in the race. Prizes were awarded to each school that took part and an enjoyable day was had by all. A word of thanks must be expressed to all those who helped out on the day, the pupils of Coláiste Chomáin, the teachers and the Gardaí all of whom made the day as special as it was.
The countdown now begins to next year's race!
